Fishing the Driftless Wisconsin 5/15 Blue River, Black Earth Creek, Big Green River, and Reads Creek

May 19, 2021 by American Fossil Hunt

As I try to keep track of productive trout rivers in the Wisconsin Driftless Area, I’ll continue to share my trips and reports. I try to explore new rivers and creeks on each visit. Some are not productive or were difficult to access, but the ones that produced nice fish will be posted and shared. In the future I plan on posting about the failed attempts more, so as to eliminate and remind me to avoid the smaller, non-productive streams.

Black Earth Creek

This was an unanticipated stop that landed a few nice brown trout. Easy river access at the bridge off 14 and S. Valley Rd. All on nymphs/copper john.

Reads Creek

Off 14 and M, just west of Readstown. Lots of pools, public access, and brown trout. I didn’t go very far and landed 10+.

Big Green River

Great public access to explore, but only the suckers were biting for me that day.

Blue River

Few small browns. Hiked up to the pool past the 2nd cattleguard but didn’t see any activity so I turned around. It was high noon and I only caught one small one on my way traveling home.

Excellent. Love Reads Creek. There is an amazing pool just downstream of a 30ish foot (?) waterfall that holds some monster browns.

Yes! that whole creek had a lot of structure and water features, I’ll be back there for sure! also would like to try upstream of the parking area soon.
